Adv Problems in Graphic Design 1, Fall 2022
This design challenge was to weave together text from Trevor Noah's Born a Crime with various supporting texts. Through this we would design a classical book as well as a digital experience for said book. My supplementing typeface was my handmade font DISC, a previous creation that can be found here.
My excerpts chosen were from Chapter 15 in Noah's book as well as supporting
materials from the famous court case Metallica v. Napster Inc. The book rounds out
with an afterword of supporting facts and figures on the issues surrounding digital piracy.
I focused my solution around a black and white format to maintain a sense of formality around what would otherwise be considered a crime (reproduction of copywritten materials). The physical printing of (UN)Authorized is to be a fabric-bound, hardback
with white embossed front and back covers.

Upon opening the novel you are greeted with simple but elegant treatments of pages
such as half title, full title, dedication and table of contents.

Each chapter opens with a fragmented detailing of DISC as well as a simple but
elegant chapter head and closes with the same treatment.

Full spreads of text are treated with minimal interruption to counteract the detailed and intense
imagery of the handmade type and any close up shots.

Between each part, the reader is met with inverted spreads featuring prominent, pulled quotes.
